Year 5 Work
2008-9
Wherever possible in year 5 we try to encourage and support children’s learning with visits and workshops. Please see the School Trips area of the website through the year to see photos of these.
In Literacy we cover a wide range of writing genres, including myths and legends, instructions, persuasive texts and a variety of different poetry styles.
Numeracy includes further developing the four main operations to include long multiplication and division, decimals and fractions. Children also begin to learn how to use brackets and simple formulae in their work.
Science involves learning about gases, changes of state, sound and hearing, plant reproduction, habitats and the Earth, Moon and Sun.

History covers the Victorians and Ancient Greece - including the ideas that we still use today.
Geography investigates Sri Lanka, Europe, and our own city, London. There is a strong emphasis on the environment in all these units.
In Art we try to develop cross curricula links with science and history in our work on leaves in the autumn term, and mythical beasts in the spring term.
DT includes a unit taught in conjunction with Parliament Hill School and the use of their workshops.
RE covers worship in the community and Buddhism.
MFL continues to develop the children’s oral and written skills in French.
PE is on Mondays and for the Autumn term we will be swimming on Fridays at Swiss Cottage Pool.
ICT lessons will be different this year as both year 5 classes now have a set of 15 laptops to use during lessons.
