Year 6 Work
2008-9
History
We learned about the different foods the Aztecs would have eaten. We then made and tasted a meal made from ingredients from Mexico; tortilla wraps and hot chocolate.
Art
We have been studying the way artists portray people in action.

We used a programme called ‘Supergoo’ in which we manipulated a photograph of ourselves using a range of special effects.
Cameron made a game using 2DIY - click here to play it.
Literacy
We have weekly ‘Big Writing’ sessions which involve us discussing the genre and topic with people at home and then having an extended writing session. We create a soothing atmosphere in class during Big Writing using a candle and classical music. Some of us word process on our laptops.
RE
Our current unit is about expressing faith through the arts. We created poems about an emotion and added it to a card.
Numeracy & Geography
In Geography we are studying Rivers. We went on a trip to Epping Forrest to undertake some field research. In our Numeracy lessons we compared the data taken from our upstream and downstream measurements. In Numeracy we have been exploring data handling and looking at the different ways to display data. To create our bar charts we had calculate the average of three readings and convert the measurements from fractions of metres into centimetres.
Year 6 have been ‘set’ by ability since January, creating 5 separate maths groups. The children have enjoyed working in smaller groups with intensified support. Most advantageously, the teachers are able to target the areas their groups most need to work on.
PSHE & Citizenship
In PSHE and Citizenship we have been learning how to work co-operatively as part of a group. We formed tribes and created our own names and rules. Our first group activity was to create a plan for a ‘dream school’. Now we are looking at issues surrounding friendship.
DT
In DT we are making Shelters. Meena has been teaching us as she is an expert in art and design.
French
In French we are revisiting language we learnt in year three and extending it. We are able to write short paragraphs now! The new grammar is very challenging but we have our lovely language assistant Farida to help us!
Brass Band
Both classes have a brass band in which they thoroughly enjoy playing and we are very proud of their achievements. Both bands rehearse every Friday with their conductor, Deirdre Box and peripatetic brass teacher, Nic Hurst. Both bands have performed in numerous concerts and a variety of exciting venues, including the Royal Albert hall.
