Gospel Oak Ofsted Report January 2005
Summary (of January 2005)
Good teaching, very good leadership and an "outstanding" partnership with parents have been singled out for praise by government inspectors who recently visited Gospel Oak School .
An Ofsted report published this week describes the school in Mansfield Road as "highly inclusive and successful".
Pupils make very good progress, achieve very well, behave well and have good attitudes to their learning, according to inspectors who reported that the school's performance has improved significantly since the last inspection.
Teaching overall is good, with a third of lessons judged to be very good, and staff expectations of pupils are high. Standards in ICT and PE are above national expectations and Year Six test results show that pupils do very well compared with those in similar schools, even though many start school with below average levels of achievement.
The inspectors noted that the school faced considerable challenges in terms of pupil mobility, large numbers of refugees and pupils learning English as an additional language and added that further improvements were needed in attendance, marking and test results in English, Maths and Science in Year Two and in Maths in Year Six.
The inspectors praised head teacher Alan Seymour, for his leadership and "clear educational direction" and the singled out the school's excellent partnership with parents which they said "contributes significantly to the pupils' personal and academic development".
Mr Seymour said: "We are very pleased that the hard work of staff, governors and pupils and the contribution made by parents in the school have been recognised by Ofsted. We set very ambitious targets for the school when I arrived three and a half years ago and although we know we can still improve more, this report shows how much progress we have made"
Chair of Governors Fiona Millar said:" This is an excellent report showing that Gospel Oak is a very effective, well led school providing a high quality of education. We are particularly delighted that, at a time when the government is focussing on increasing parental involvement in schools, Gospel Oak is leading the way by already being judged to be excellent in this area."
