The Primary Geography Quality Mark – Silver Award

As you may remember, geography was a big focus in our school last year. After discussions with children we rewrote all the geography units to make them more relevant and exciting. We made sure that all our topics had a link to the environment and sustainability, as we all felt that this was an increasingly important area to learn about. We also had an exciting competition which almost all children took part in.

Standards in geography really improved last year as a result of all these changes. We wanted to recognise the hard work that everyone, both children and staff, had put in to improving the subject. We therefore applied for the Primary Geography Quality Mark Silver Award. This was devised by the Geographical Association and is:

...an award for primary schools who wish to achieve recognition for the quality and progress in geography leadership, curriculum development, learning and teaching in their school.

The Silver Award is given ‘in recognition of the implementation of whole school approaches that support excellence in geography’. We were one of only 5 schools in the country to achieve the award in 2009.
