All children at Gospel Oak have two PE lessons a week (click here to see when)

  • At Key Stage 1 these might be: games, gymnastics, dance or athletics (running, jumping, throwing).
  • At Key Stage 2 these might be: games, gymnastics, dance, athletics, swimming or outdoor activities.
  • From years 2-6 one PE lesson a week is taught by Jef Gooding (a secondary trained PE teacher) and the other session by the class teacher or the instructor at Highbury or Swiss Cottage swimming pools. click here for info on PE Kit
  • We have also been awarded Active Mark Gold status for our sporting provision and sporting achievement. Gospel Oak is one of only 3 primary schools in inner London to be awarded gold status. In October 2005 Sebastian Coe visited the school to present the award. Click here for pictures and videos.

Winners of the CSSA Athletics 2008

Last year Gospel Oak had its most successful year ever in terms of excellence as well as overall participation.

Outside the PE curriculum after school clubs and sessions were held in: girls, boys and mixed football, netball, fencing, x-country, cricket, athletics, rounders, street dance, gymnastics and basketball. Thanks to Omer Pallas (site officer) for helping organise teams and giving up his time to accompany children on sports trips and help run clubs. During lunchtimes and after-school Barry Archer coached many football sessions and JSLA students from Parliament Hill School ran many multi-sports clubs for KS1 children as well. Kevin McCabe and Luke McCann organised and refereed football matches in the junior playground every lunch hour.

Whilst fun and high rates of participation are the main focus (over 60 KS2 children took part in each of the athletics and X-country events), the end result of the children's enthusiasm is that Gospel Oak is still the most successful school in Camden in sports competitions. Children have this year taken part in over 80 inter-school fixtures - the majority of Key Stage 2 pupils (and all of Year 6) have represented the school. The Camden Schools Sports Association runs leagues and tournaments throughout the year which 38 primary schools take part in. Last year's results (2008-9) were:

Winners: CSSA Boys Football Tournament, Highgate schools mixed gender football tournament, High 5s Netball League (A & B competitions), Sports Hall Athletics, Cricket, Outdoor Athletics, Year 3&4 Benchball Tournament - B Teams.

Runners-Up: CSSA Football League (North) both boys and girls, Girls Basketball League

3rd: Boys Basketball League

4th: Girls Years 5&6 Football Tournament

7th: Swimming,

9th: X-Country

10 children were selected to represent Camden in the London Mini Games at Crystal Palace at: gymnastics, athletics and football. At this event (the biggest children's sports event in Europe) they competed against the most talented children in London at a world class venue.
